Luel Lewis

Luel Lewis, 91, of Normangee, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 24th, 2017. Luel was born October 13, 1925 to Clayton and Annie Lewis. He lived in the Plainview community most of his life.

Luel loved farming, ranching and gardening. It's been said that he could fix anything. "It may not be pretty, but it will work." He spent his professional life with the City of Bryan Power Plant, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the "Greatest Generation," proudly serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Luel was a dedicated member of Harmony Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and working in numerous areas of the church. He served on Plainview Cemetery's board of directors for 67 years, committing untold hours to marking graves, maintaining records, making repairs, and even donating his own land to expand the cemetery. He truly never met a stranger and was always willing to help. He was a role model to all who knew him.

Luel was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Annie Lewis; sisters Bettie Mac Moore and Lois Bennett; and brother Roy C. Lewis.

Luel is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Alice Gray Lewis, daughter Debbie Carter and son-in-law Billy Carter, daughter Kay Wright and son-in-law Ron Wright, daughter Connie Drews and son-in-law Billy Drews, and daughter Donna Barry. One of Luel's greatest joys in life was his four grandchildren. He was blessed with two granddaughters, Christie Carter and Casey Drews Steele, as well as her husband Todd Steele and a great-grandson, Laken Steele. Luel was also blessed with two grandsons, Clayton Barry and Cade Wright, as well as Cade's wife, Racheal Wright. Luel's dear friend Austin Dickson also brought much joy to his life, sharing in his passion for fishing, hunting, and all types of farm and ranch work.

Luel made many special memories each year with his family, particularly at Christmas. He always decorated his home's exterior, largely to see his grandchildren's eyes light up when they saw the bright lights. Santa's sleigh bells would also "mysteriously" ring outside whenever he disappeared, causing the grandkids to rush into bed for fear that Santa Claus would pass them by.

A memorial celebration is scheduled for Thursday, July 27th at 10 a.m. At Luel's request, the family will wear jeans to the service. Friends are welcome to do the same. The family will welcome friends at a visitation on Wednesday, July 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Both the visitation and memorial services will be at Harmony Baptist Church, 104 Batson Street, Normangee, Texas, 77871. Interment will follow the memorial service at Plainview Cemetery.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful, compassionate care provided by Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Luel's honor to Plainview Cemetery, in care of Normangee State Bank, P.O. Box 189, Normangee, Texas, 77871.

Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville, TX is in charge of all arrangements.
