Lewis "Ann" Sandles

Lewis "Ann" (Philio) Sandles was born on November 23, 1945, in Grimes County to the late Lewis Philio and Clara Bell Johnson-Philio. God called her to eternal rest on November 19, 2023.


Ann was educated in the Walker County School District and graduated from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age, and first was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in the community of Hopewell, Texas. After her marriage to her husband, Darnell Sandles, she became a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Madisonville, Texas, where she had served for fifty-eight years. She was a member of the mission society, senior choir, youth department matron and later became the youth department director and Vacation Bible School director. She also became a part of the cafeteria committee. Ann served Madisonville CISD for forty-five years in various positions. For the past thirty-five years, she was the Jr. High Librarian.


Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Philio and Clara Bell Philio; husband of forty years, Darnell Sandles; two sisters, Bobbie Haynes and Delores Bowden; and brother, Charles Philio. She leaves to cherish her memory her two children, daughter Alicia B. Hopkins (Roderick), and son, Shelton K. Sandles; two grandchildren, granddaughter Megan Alise' Sandles-Douglas and grandsons, Camise Tyler Curtis and Pryce A. Hunter; two sisters, Doris Doggett (Roger) of Hopewell, Texas and Johnnie C. Williams (Johnny) of Houston, Texas; one brother, Billy R. Philio (Verna) of Riverside, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Byrd of San Antonio, Texas and Jessie Sandles of Houston, Texas; one brother-in-law, William Sandles Jr (Eler Mae) of Houston, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews family and friends.


Homegoing services for Lewis "Ann" Sandles will be held 1 P.M., Friday, November 24, 2023 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Rev. Edward Collins will officiate the service. A visitation will take place from 12 P.M. until service time at the church. Interment will follow in High Prairie Cemetery.


Pallbearers: David Williams, Roy Haynes, Darnell Sandles, Richard Haynes, Lorenzo Philio, John Sandles.


Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville, Texas.
