James Arlen
McVey
October 20, 1935 — June 9, 2026
Madisonville, Texas
James Arlen McVey, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a cherished member of the Madisonville community, peacefully passed away on June 9, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on October 20, 1935, in Huntsville, Texas, James lived a life rich with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable moments. His wit and humor were legendary, and he had a special gift for breaking the ice with a warm smile and a humorous remark, making everyone feel welcome in his presence.
Before returning to his calling as a second-generation barber, he proudly served in the U.S. Army as a tank driver receiving numerous awards. Shortly after enlisting, he married his beloved wife, Sue. They went on to have two children and spent seventy-plus beautiful years together. After his time in the military, James dedicated sixty-eight years of his life to the art of barbering, where he cultivated a close-knit community of clients who gathered frequently at the shop with or with out getting a hair cut. This would land his shop a nick name by close family, as they lovingly referred to the shop as "The Gossip Shack." James worked as a barber in Pasadena before continuing his legacy out of his family home in Madisonville. It was truly something special. For James, cutting hair was never just a job; it was a delightful opportunity to connect with friends and share the latest news, all while keeping his haircut prices remarkably affordable, never straying far from $8 to $10 per cut. Throughout the years, he remained a devoted Christian with an unwavering faith.
James was preceded in death by both of his parents, Willis Franklin and Verlie Ann (Tabb) McVey. He is survived by his wife, Sue McVey of Madisonville; son, Richard McVey (Carol) of Crosby; daughter, Debra Lynn Bransford (Brian Sr.) of Friendswood; grandchildren, Amy DePena (Bolivar) of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Brian Bransford Jr. (Jennifer) of Houston; great-grandchildren, Riley Bransford, Evan Bransford, Elise Bransford, Leonardo DePena and Santiago "Rocky" DePena.
A funeral service for James Arlen McVey will be held 2 P.M., Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville, Texas. Joel Douget will officiate the service. Interment will follow in Allphin Cemetery, Midway, Texas. A time of visitation will be held from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M., Friday, June 12, 2026, at Madisonville Funeral Home.
