Birtie Sue Gallagher, lovingly known as “Granny”, “Auntie”, “Pete”, and “Nanny,” passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, at the age of 78. She was born to Troy Lewis Blanton and Lillian Elva Watson on January 18, 1948, in Clarksville, Texas. Birtie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth and caring spirit touched countless lives. She made her home in Madisonville, Texas, where she built a life centered around the people she loved most.
To know Granny was to know someone who loved deeply and welcomed everyone with open arms. She was affectionate, warm, caring, and never met a stranger. Birtie had a way of making people feel like family, whether they had known her for years or had just met her. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, talking, laughing, joking around, and simply being together.
She found joy in the simple things in life—working in her yard, going shopping, cooking for the people she loved, and camping at Lake Limestone with family. Her cooking was a special part of family life, and many will remember her signature dishes, including her macaroni and tomatoes. She had her own unique way of doing things, too—sometimes letting the smoke from the kitchen serve as her cooking timer.
Granny had a personality all her own. She loved to joke around and had a quick, playful sense of humor. Her familiar sayings— “Let me get that fly swatter,” “old heifer,” “I love you,” and “do what?”—will live on in the memories of those who knew her best. Oh, and, of course, there was always a cigarette and a cup of coffee close by.
Above all, Birtie treasured her family. She was the kind of grandmother whose presence made people feel safe, loved, and at home. She welcomed everyone, cared deeply for those around her, and taught her family through the way she lived—to have a strong moral compass, to do what is right, and to always treat others with love.
For her grandchildren, some of the most cherished memories will be the ordinary moments that became extraordinary simply because Granny was there. Family trips, including a memorable trip to Schlitterbahn, time together around the kitchen table, and enjoying her cooking are memories that will be treasured for generations.
Her family will miss her laughter, her voice, her jokes, her cooking, her stories, and most of all, the feeling of being loved that came so naturally whenever Granny was around. Though she is no longer with us, the love she gave so freely will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those fortunate enough to have called her family.
Birtie was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Donald Gallagher; her daughter, Juanita Kelly; and her siblings, Troy Dean Blanton, Anne Mandrell, Linda McCorkle, and Luther “Eddy” Ward.
She is survived by her children, Rita Lowery (Randy), Lewis “Bo” Mitchell (Stephanie), Donald Gallagher Jr. (Amy), Michael Gallagher (Kelly), Mark Gallagher , and Tami Gallagher, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever carry her love and memories with them.
A graveside service for Birtie, officiated by pastor Mike Cousins, will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, in the Wealthy Cemetery in Normangee, Texas at 10 A.M. followed by lunch at the Pentecostal Annex Building.
Birtie Sue Gallagher leaves behind a legacy not measured in accomplishments or possessions, but in love, family, memories, and the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
Rest peacefully, Granny. We love you.Final arrangements for Birtie Sue Gallagher are under the compassionate care and direction of Madisonville Funeral Home, Madisonville, Texas.
